Port A Fishing Report - October 17, 2014

Last updated 3 years ago

You don’t normally see people reeling in these kinds of fish at Horace Caldwell Pier.

Unusual catches at the pier this week have included a blue runner and a 55-inch lemon shark, said Blake Wallingsford, who works at Keepers, a shop on the pier.

Also seen this week at the pier were a 47-inch kingfish and some small blacktip sharks, he said.

“A few big shark fishermen have been rocking it the past few days,” Wallingsford said.

At Dolphin Dock, Gary Carter said offshore catches recently have included vermilion snapper, a few kingfish, Atlantic sharpnose shark, dorado and a spinner shark weighing 150 to 200 pounds just about every trip.

A jaunt into state waters, near the standpipe, yielded ling, a few red snapper and pompano, he said.

Customers have been reeling in gafftop and whiting in the channels, Carter said.

Jessi Gaskins at Woody’s Sports Center said anglers on recent offshore trips have caught ling, kingfish and blacktip shark.

They’ve been finding black and red drum, Atlantic sharpnose shark and gafftop in the bay, she said.

At Fisherman’s Wharf, Carlos Gutierrez said folks heading offshore have been returning with kingfish, dorado and blackfin and yellowfin tuna.

Redfish, black drum and Spanish mackerel have greeted anglers in the bays, he said.

Mike Mitchell at Deep Sea Headquarters said offshore catches during an eight-hour trip on Thursday, Oct. 16, included Atlantic sharpnose shark, dorado, blackfin tuna and a few kingfish.

On a 12-hour trip the day before, anglers hooked some big kingfish, including one that tipped the scale at about 50 pounds, he said.

Mitchell said private bay charters have been doing well with redfish. Folks on party boats have been catching gafftop “one right after the other” in the bays, he said.
