Nice shark catches at pier
You don’t have to venture miles offshore to catch big fish in the Port Aransas area.
Blake Wallingsford reported that a six-foot blacktip shark and bull shark about the same size were caught at Horace Caldwell Pier this week. Anglers have been hauling in some other good catches there, too.
“It’s been crazy,” said Wallingsford, who works at Keepers, a shop on the pier. “They’ve also been catching a lot of redfish and Spanish mackerel.”
At Dolphin Dock, Gary Carter said an 80-hour trip offshore this week resulted in catches of yellowfin and blackfin tuna, vermilion snapper, kingfish and Atlantic sharpnose shark.
Folks fishing in channels have been getting into whiting and gafftop, Carter said.
Mike Mitchell at Deep Sea Headquarters said boats heading offshore have been finding blackfin tuna, Atlantic sharpnose shark, kingfish, jackfish, ling and dorado.
Bay trips have been producing gafftop and a few whiting, he said.
At Woody’s Sports Center, Jessica Gaskins said recent offshore catches have included kingfish, red drum and Atlantic sharpnose shark.
Anglers in the bays have been hooking red and black drum, flounder, Spanish mackerel and gafftop, she said.
Karen Leister at Fisherman’s Wharf said folks heading offshore have been rewarded with catches of vermilion snapper, kingfish and strawberry grouper.
The bays have been yielding flounder, tarpon and sheepshead, she said.
